Summit Diplomatic Activity Peaks On The Eve of the New Year
In the middle of December 2009 (the 51-th week of the year), PRESIDENT HOTEL was involved in very intensive summit diplomatic activities. During the week beginning December 14, 2009, three foreign official delegations of the high level were accommodated at the Hotel, and namely:
- Delegation of NATO headed by Secretary General Anders Fogh Rassmussen was in Russia with a working visit during 15-17 December 2009. Afghanistan was the top of Rassmussen’s agenda in Moscow. Alliance wanted Russia to participate more actively in the war, supply free of charge weapons, oil and gas to Afghanistan. NATO Secretary General A. Fogh Rasmussen had meetings with President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin trying to persuade them to activate Russia’s role in the Afghanistan war.
- Delegation of Socialist Republic of Vietnam headed by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung paid a working visit to Russia during 13-15 December 2009. The delegation was received by President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. The two sides discussed the state and perspectives of bilateral relations in detail. The were signed several important deals, including on the creation of a joint investment fund, purchasing a submarine and other military hardware and a strategic partnership between the countries’ two leading energy firms.
- Delegation of the Republic of Croatia headed by President Stipe Mesic on December 13-16, 2009, paid a working visit to Russia. In Moscow President S.Mesic discussed with the Russian leaders a possibility of linking Croatia to “Southern Stream” gas pipeline. At present, an appropriate intergovernment agreement on the topic is being prepared.
